Akihiro Shima received his Ph.D. in radiation biology from the University of
Tokyo in 1971, and has been a professor of radiation biology at the
University of Tokyo since 1985. His principal research interests have
focused on DNA repair in cultured human cells and later in cultured fish
cells. Since 1985, he has been using medaka to study germ-cell mutagenesis,
which has led to his involvement in the first generation of the Medaka
Genome Project.
